Endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure that is often performed in women who suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding. This procedure involves removing or destroying the lining of the uterus, which reduces or eliminates menstrual bleeding altogether. If you are considering endometrial ablation, it's important to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. In this blog post, we'll cover everything you need to know about endometrial ablation, including the types of procedures available, how to prepare for the surgery, and what to expect during recovery.

Signs That Endometrial Ablation Might Be Right For You

Here are some symptoms and indicators that might suggest that endometrial ablation is the best option for your situation.

           Heavy or Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding

If you regularly experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding that significantly impacts your daily life, endometrial ablation may be a suitable option for you. This procedure aims to reduce or eliminate excessive bleeding, providing relief and improving your quality of life.

           Failed Conservative Treatments

If you have tried other conservative treatments, such as medication or hormonal therapy, without success, endometrial ablation might be the next step. It can be an effective alternative to more invasive procedures like hysterectomy.

           Desire for a Non-hormonal Approach

Endometrial ablation offers a non-hormonal solution for managing heavy menstrual bleeding, making it a suitable choice for individuals who prefer not to rely on hormonal medications or those who have experienced adverse effects from hormone-based treatments.

           Completed Childbearing

Endometrial ablation is generally recommended for individuals who have completed their childbearing journey and do not wish to conceive in the future. It is important to consider this factor before opting for the procedure, as pregnancy after endometrial ablation can be risky.

           Types of Endometrial Ablation

There are several types of endometrial ablation procedures available, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Some of the most common types of endometrial ablation include:

Radiofrequency Ablation: This procedure involves using a heated electrode to destroy the uterine lining.

Cryoablation: This procedure involves freezing the uterine lining.

Thermal Balloon Ablation: This procedure involves inserting a balloon catheter into the uterus and inflating it with hot water to destroy the uterine lining.

Microwave Ablation: This procedure involves using microwave energy to destroy the uterine lining.

Your doctor will help you determine which type of endometrial ablation is best for you based on your medical history and individual needs.

           Preparing for the Procedure

Before undergoing endometrial ablation, your doctor will likely recommend that you stop taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for several days leading up to the procedure. You may also need to fast for a certain amount of time before the surgery. Additionally, your doctor will likely perform a pelvic exam to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.

           During the Procedure

Endometrial ablation is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that you will be able to go home the same day as the surgery. The procedure itself usually takes less than an hour. Before the procedure begins, you will be given anesthesia to help you relax and reduce discomfort. Your doctor will then insert a special instrument, such as a hysteroscope, into your uterus to visualize the uterine lining. They will then use one of the aforementioned techniques to remove or destroy the lining of your uterus. Since you will be under anesthesia during this procedure, you shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort.

           Recovering From Endometrial Ablation

After the procedure, you may experience some vaginal bleeding and cramping for a few days. You may also experience nausea and vomiting due to the anesthesia. Your doctor may recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate any discomfort you experience. Additionally, you should avoid using tampons or having sex for at least a few weeks after the procedure to allow your body to heal.

Endometrial ablation can be an effective way to reduce or eliminate heavy menstrual bleeding, which can have a significant impact on a woman's quality of life. By understanding what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, you can better prepare yourself for the surgery and make the recovery process as smooth as possible. If you are considering endometrial ablation, be sure to talk to your doctor about your individual needs and concerns to determine if this procedure is right for you.

Women's Health: When Should You Get a Second Opinion?

Chances are you've heard advice over the years to seek a second opinion regarding health diagnoses. But when should you get one? Read about it in this blog.

Chances are you've heard advice over the years to seek a second opinion regarding health diagnoses. If you've never tried to get a second opinion, the idea of going to another doctor may seem unnecessary. Many people don't seek second opinions simply because they're afraid of insulting their regular doctor.

However, second opinions can help you receive better care because you get your condition examined by someone with a different perspective and knowledge set. You may find that your initial diagnosis was incorrect or correct, that there's a less invasive treatment available to you, or that there are details that help refine the type of treatment you need.

You don't have to get a second opinion. However, a second opinion is advisable in certain circumstances.

When Your Diagnosis (or Lack Thereof) Doesn't Sound Right

When you have a health problem, you trust that your doctor will diagnose the condition and find the cause. However, even the best doctors can be stumped by strange symptoms. This can lead to diagnoses that just don't sound right, or, in some cases, to claims that nothing is wrong.

Receiving no diagnosis can occur because your lab tests and outward appearance both seem normal while you may still feel pain or strange symptoms. If you're told that the doctor can't find anything wrong, yet you still feel like something is off, get a second opinion. This isn't second-guessing; it's persisting until you get an explanation for what's giving you those strange symptoms.

As you prepare for your second-opinion appointment, start logging your symptoms (if you aren't already). Keep track of when your symptoms occur and what you feel like when they happen. Every detail can potentially help the doctor figure out what's going on.

When Treatment Advice Is Invasive or Extreme

Some health conditions call for urgent action that could seem drastic but is actually necessary. For example, if you're having odd abdominal pains, and a doctor identifies it as appendicitis that requires emergency surgery, that's an extreme plan of action—but one that you may agree with.

However, when you receive information and treatment advice that seems to be more intense than it has to be, you'll want a second opinion to confirm or adjust the advice. For example, if you have fibroids that are small but still causing you problems, you'll need some sort of treatment. If the first doctor you see says you need to have a hysterectomy, you may want a second opinion because other treatments exist that aren't as severe.

It's always possible that the first doctor had good reason for suggesting surgery instead of something like ablation. But if you can't find out why or still don't understand even after the doctor tries to explain it, you may need to seek a second opinion to confirm the first diagnosis.

When Your Doctor Hasn't Heard of Newer Treatments

Doctors are not always aware of the latest research on treatments and outcomes. This happens more often than you'd think. It's not that they're resistant to learning about new treatments; many doctors just don't have the time to constantly read new research.

If you've found yourself at odds with your doctor because they refuse to consider a specific treatment or are advocating for one that you've just learned isn't effective for your needs, obtain a second opinion from a doctor who's familiar with the research you saw. Keep in mind that if you're interested in a really new or experimental treatment, it may be harder to find a doctor who's heard of it or is willing to administer it.

What You Should Know About Fibroids

Have you recently found out you have fibroids? If so, learn about what you should know about this condition and if you should seek treatment.

Many women know at least one person, even as an acquaintance or classmate, who has had issues with fibroids. If you've been informed that you have fibroids and shouldn't worry if you haven't experienced symptoms, everything should be fine, shouldn't it? However, there are occasions when no clear explanation is provided, leaving the patient uncertain about what the future might hold in terms of those fibroids.

Good news: If you're not having symptoms, then the fibroids may not really be a problem. But it certainly helps to learn more about them and how they can change over your lifetime.

           Most Fibroids Don't Cause Problems

Statistics vary, but most women develop at least one fibroid at some point.

           UCLA Health

puts the number at 70 percent to 80 percent. But 70 percent to 80 percent of women aren't having fibroid-related problems. In fact, most women with fibroids won't have issues. You might find out you have fibroids because of an exam or test, but their mere presence doesn't mean much in terms of how you feel.

So just because you have them, this doesn't mean you'll have to do anything about them. This may be why your doctor might tell you not to worry if you have an exam and find out you have them. They really don't cause a problem for most women.

Many Fibroids Become Less of an Issue With Age

Even better news is that menopause can make problems with fibroids much less likely, if you're worried about something happening in the future. Fibroids essentially feed off estrogen, and as you enter perimenopause, when your estrogen production begins to slow, you're automatically cutting off the hormones that supply the fibroids and make them grow.

Fibroids can actually shrink a little, although it's more common for your symptoms to improve considerably, leading to substantial relief.

It's rare for more fibroids to grow or for current ones to grow bigger after your body slows down estrogen. While there may not be a 100 percent guarantee that nothing will happen, you aren't likely to have additional problems at that point.

Many Clues Can Appear When They Do Cause Problems

What if you are having unusual symptoms that you think might be linked to the fibroids? If you're having very heavy bleeding that does not follow your normal menstrual patterns, that's a huge sign that something is wrong. Heavy bleeding isn't always due to fibroids, but it's a very common symptom, especially if it makes you anemic.

Extreme pain during menstruation is another sign, although this symptom can show up with a number of gynecological issues. Another strange but definite symptom is a feeling of fullness along with more constipation or urination, which is an indication that you have a very large fibroid.

One of the frustrating things about the genitourinary system is that so many symptoms can occur with different conditions. Your symptoms may not necessarily be linked to fibroids. If that's the situation, it's crucial for you and your doctor to continue investigating to identify the underlying cause.

The uncertainty surrounding fibroids can trigger emotionally instability similar to what you might experience with unfamiliar symptoms from an unknown condition. The lack of clarity about what to anticipate can have a significant impact on your mental well-being.

Your breasts change with factors like age, menstrual cycle, and pregnancy. Some changes are regular and should not work you up, but many other changes call for medical attention. Consult a specialist if you experience an irregular pattern of abnormal breast shifts. Discover four breast issues that require medical intervention.

and ranges from minute to severe. Whereas many women with mastalgia experience a breast cancer scare, you should not worry yourself sick. Mastalgia is not always related to breast cancer.

Cyclical mastalgia is often hormonal and comes around the ovulation period until the onset of menstruation. Pain worsens the last days before you get your period. The discomfort usually affects both breasts and is generally accompanied by breast swelling.

Noncyclic mastalgia is not linked to menstruation; you get the pain in one place. Noncyclic mastalgia is rare but usually occurs after menopause. This condition usually affects one breast and may manifest as constant or intermittent pain.

           2. Fibroadenoma

Fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous lump that consists of stromal tissue and breast tissue. You can get fibroadenoma on one or both breasts. Fibroadenoma comes in various categories: simple, complex, juvenile, and giant.

Some fibroadenomas are so tiny that you will not even feel the lumps. Nevertheless, when you identify one, the tumor is very distinct from nearby tissue. That is because fibroadenomas have a distinguishable feature with defined edges. Besides, the tumor feels like marbles and can move beneath your skin.

Whereas the exact origin of fibroadenomas is unknown, hormones like estrogen facilitate the tumor's growth. Some fibroadenomas resolve without medical intervention, but you should not overlook a checkup if you suspect you have one.

           3. Mastitis

Mastitis is a condition where your breasts swell and develop pain. You are at more risk of mastitis when breastfeeding because your ducts are blocked. Nevertheless, men and women who have not breastfed also get mastitis. In such cases, causes range from tobacco toxins to nipple damage.

Often, mastitis affects one breast, and the symptoms develop within a short time. Common symptoms include:

            A hard wedge-shaped area

            White or bloody nipple discharge

A constant burning pain or painful breasts

If you breastfeed and get constant mastitis, the problem could be with the attachment position. So, if you experience any issues when you breastfeed, seek help from a midwife or a gynecology services specialist.

           4. Breast Lumps

A lump or a mass feels like a frozen nut and is hard or distinct from the other parts of your breast. Notable causes are cancer, cysts, and fibroadenomas. Menstruation can also cause breast lumps that disappear before or at the end of the cycle.

Whereas the best course of action when you notice a lump is to consult a doctor, medication is not always necessary. Your doctor examines you and could recommend an ultrasound or mammogram to study the lump. Medication depends on the lump type. For instance, if your issue is an abscess, a specialist lances or drains the lump with a specialized needle and prescribes antibiotics.

Some lumps, like fibroadenoma and injuries-related lumps, do not need removal. Nonetheless, you can never tell the type of lump unless you take a test. At worst, breast lumps signify breast cancer. However, you should not worry because you can live a normal life with proper treatment and care.

Due to the rise in breast cancer, breast problems often cause significant anxiety in patients. Nonetheless, breast problems do not always indicate that you are cancerous. If you discover any abnormal breast changes,

Ovarian cysts are common among many women of childbearing age. A good number of cysts do not exhibit symptoms and heal without treatment. Yet, other types can cause significant complications that call for management and treatment. For instance, ruptured cysts almost always cause abdominal or pelvic pain.

PCOS is one of the main causes of infertility among women of childbearing age. Poly means many, so many small cysts in your ovaries may characterize PCOS. However, not all women with PCOS develop cysts.

The leading cause of PCOS is hormonal imbalances, specifically the overproduction of androgen. Women usually produce lower levels of androgens. So, an increased amount stops ovulation or causes irregular periods. Symptoms of PCOS include:

Excess growth of hair on your body and face

            Darker skin in body folds

            A thinner scalp

Nonetheless, you may not experience any symptoms, so you will not always discover that you are affected. Often, you get a diagnosis when a significant occurrence like difficulty in conceiving happens. Finally, untreated PCOS predisposes you to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and endometrial cancer, so monitor the condition closely.

           2. Functional Cysts

Functional cysts develop when a fault occurs during the egg-release process. Each month at ovulation, a sac called a dominant follicle releases an egg. In some cases, the sac does not release the egg and instead fills with liquid to form a follicular cyst. These cysts are also prevalent among women under infertility treatments.

In other cases, your sac releases the egg and a corpus luteum cyst is formed. The corpus luteum cyst produces progesterone allowing the uterus to support a fertilized egg. The cyst usually goes away at approximately 12 weeks gestation. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum usually resolves within two weeks to 3 months. Many functional cysts heal without treatment, and you may not even realize you have one. Nonetheless, if the cyst grows large, you can experience different signs and symptoms. These include abdominal pain, pelvic pain, and discomfort during sexual intimacy.

Researchers attribute endometriomas to an autoimmune response or retrograde menstruation. The autoimmune response happens when the normal period of endometrial tissue causes an inflammatory reaction. As a result, your pelvis scars or suffers damage. Retrograde menstruation occurs when some menstrual blood flows back to your body instead of outside through the birth canal.

Cells that form the ova also make different tissues and can sometimes create an ovarian cyst. Dermoid cysts mainly occur in one ovary, but

of the reported cases affect both ovaries. Other than the germ cells, genetic inheritance is also a cause of dermoid cysts. Since they originate from cells with the potential to form different tissue, dermoid cysts often contain skin, hair, teeth, skin and cartilage.

Symptoms of dermoid cysts are pressure in the pelvis, nausea, and painful urination. In extreme cases, health complications such as torsion — when the cyst twists along an axis — and infection could also arise. Whereas many females do not experience any signs, a large dermoid cyst causes pain and, in extreme cases, calls for surgery.

Over the decades, increasingly more people have embraced cosmetic surgery because it helps them feel better. One of the segments of cosmetic surgery that has risen in popularity lately is cosmetic gynecology.

More women are embracing cosmetic gynecology procedures because they can reverse the effects of aging and childbirth, increase libido, enhance sexual intimacy, and improve their mental health. If you are undecided about seeking cosmetic gynecology services, we have compiled some insights into how the various procedures can directly improve your situation.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

This cosmetic gynecology procedure involves the removal of excess tissue from the skin folds (clitoral hood) that cover and protect the clitoris. The reconstruction of remaining skin folds exposes more of the clitoris.

This cosmetic procedure aims to refine the visual appeal of the vulva and increase sexual pleasure. It can also help reduce the irritation that arises from clothes rubbing against the clitoral hood.

           Labiaplasty

Women with excess skin folds on the sides of the vaginal opening often experience pain during sex due to the twisting and tugging of the labia. Abnormally sized labia can make it difficult for a woman to exercise and maintain proper hygiene.

It can also cause the affected females to be more susceptible to urinary tract infections. Labiaplasty removes excess skin folds from the labia. The procedure also works to correct tears and enlargement of the labia due to childbirth.

           Hymenoplasty

The hymen is a thin, pinkish membrane that lies about an inch and a half into the vulva covering the vaginal entrance. It stops pathogens from entering the vagina until puberty. The hymen usually ruptures during the first sexual encounter but could also rupture due to the use of tampons and taking part in strenuous physical activities like cycling and gymnastics.

Hymenoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that works to reconstruct a ruptured hymen. The procedure also allows women born without a hymen to get one.

           Orgasm Enhancement

Orgasm enhancement can involve the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). The treatment comprises injecting rich nutrients and platelets from the female's blood into the upper walls of the clitoris and vagina, promoting the healing and rejuvenation of damaged skin, blood vessels, and collagen in the vaginal area.

This triggers new tissue growth, leading to the thickening and expansion of the clitoris and vaginal walls. The result can be more comfortable stimulation and enhanced sexual intimacy.

           Perineoplasty

During childbirth, a woman can suffer the tearing or scarring of perineum tissues (the tissues between the vagina and the rectum). It can cause loose or bulging skin around the vagina, loss of sensation during sex, low libido, urinary or bowel incontinence, and loss of self-esteem.

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure that strengthens and tightens the perineum, removes damaged and scar tissue around the vagina, and narrows the vaginal opening. It also works to improve sexual satisfaction.

           Vaginoplasty

Childbirth can also cause vaginal injury, leading to complications like pelvic floor disease. Vaginoplasty encompasses the reconstruction and recreation of the vagina and the tightening of the pelvic floor muscles. The procedure is also useful for repairing childbirth vaginal defects, like creating a functional vagina, preventing the pooling of blood during menstruation, and removing abnormal structures or excess tissue.

Vaginoplasty is also a gender-affirmation surgery for transgender people. Part of their male external genitalia, like the penis skin and scrotum, is removed and reconfigured into female genitalia.

How to do a Breast Self-Exam

Breast self-exam, or regularly examining your breasts on your own, can be an important way to find breast cancer early, when it’s more likely to be treated successfully. Although no single test can detect all breast cancers early, many people report that performing a breast self-exam in combination with other screening methods can increase the odds of early detection.

Five steps for checking for breast cancer at home

Step 1: Examine Your Breasts in a Mirror With Hands on Hips Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Here’s what you should look for: Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor’s attention: Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out) Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling

Step 2: Raise Arms and Examine Your Breasts Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.

Step 3: Look for Signs of Breast Fluid While you’re at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood).

Step 4: Feel for Breast Lumps While Lying Down Next, check for breast lumps or abnormalities by feeling your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast, and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Press down with your fingers and move them in a circular motion that’s about the size of a quarter (or an inch around). Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This up-and-down approach seems to work best for most women. Be sure to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts: for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you've reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.

Step 5: Feel Your Breasts for Lumps While Standing or Sitting Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in step

Am I In Menopause?

Hot flashes. Mood swings. Weight gain. Low libido. These things and many more are infamously associated with menopause — the natural biological process that every woman goes through in her 40s or 50s.

Menopause marks the end of your reproductive years. During and after menopause, you’re no longer fertile, but the hormonal changes that come along with it can trigger an abundance of unpleasant symptoms that make life miserable.

If you’ve noticed that your menstrual cycle is becoming irregular, or you’re experiencing new symptoms like hot flashes or mood swings, you might be wondering if you’re in menopause.

The timing and symptoms of menopause vary widely from woman to woman, so it’s not always easy to know if what you’re experiencing is menopause or something else.

           Understanding perimenopause

Perimenopause is the period of time before menopause itself, but after your most fertile years are behind you. Most women are in perimenopause for about four years, but it can range from a few months to 10 years.

When you enter perimenopause, your fertility naturally begins declining. Your body produces less estrogen than it did before, and fluctuating hormone levels can trigger symptoms that mimic symptoms of menopause.

For many women, the first signs of perimenopause start appearing when they’re in their 40s. Some women notice signs as early as their 30s.

A few common signs of perimenopause (and menopause) include:

            Hot flashes

            Mood swings

            Low libido

            Vaginal dryness

            Fatigue

            Weight changes

            Urinary incontinence

Since the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause can appear identical, it’s easy to wonder what stage you fall into. The biggest difference between the two is that if you’re in perimenopause, you still have a menstrual period, even if bleeding is irregular.

           The start of menopause

You enter menopause after you’ve gone a full year without a period. By that point, your ovaries are no longer releasing eggs and you can’t get pregnant. The symptoms of perimenopause and menopause can be similar, but many women find that symptoms get worse as time goes on.

The good news is that menopausal symptoms aren’t permanent. Hot flashes, mood swings, and other common symptoms generally last 4-5 years after the onset of menopause. After that, hormone levels stabilize and symptoms fade.

           Surviving menopausal symptoms

Although symptoms of menopause aren’t permanent, they can have a profound impact on your quality of life. Some women find their symptoms are short-lived and manageable without medical intervention, but others experience severe symptoms that make life difficult.

Three Common Reasons for Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation encompasses a number of procedures, but whatever part of your vagina, labia, or clitoris that you want to enhance, there are some common reasons for doing so. Aesthetics is rarely the only reason that a woman undergoes vaginal rejuvenation. Here are three of the most common reasons other than aesthetics.

           Vaginal Restoration

Aging and hormonal changes, childbirth, obesity, or pelvic cancers can severely damage the vagina and surrounding tissues. This damage can leave the muscles of the vagina and pelvic floor weak. Weak pelvic and vaginal muscles can cause problems with reaching orgasm during sex, as well as urinary incontinence and other health conditions. Vaginal rejuvenation can often correct these problems.

           Urinary Incontinence

Sometimes vaginal rejuvenation has nothing to do with sex or appearance, but has everything to do with urinary incontinence. Many women, especially after childbirth, experience some form of stress incontinence. Kegel exercises are important for preventing these problems, but they don’t always offer a cure. Some women benefit from vaginal rejuvenation by toning and tightening the vagina walls that is causing incontinence.

           Sexual Satisfaction

Pregnancy, childbirth, and health conditions can leave your vagina stretched and loose. While it may be completely natural for the vagina to do this after childbirth, it can take away some of the pleasure you once enjoyed during sex. A complete vaginal rejuvenation can restore your ability to enjoy orgasms more frequently.
